The Who and What of Acne

Acne is an age old problem. People have been suffering with acne for centuries. It is not something new that just appeared on the horizon. If you are suffering from acne, you are certainly not alone not you the first and you sure will not be the last.Just to set the record straight and to provide some information for you about acne here is the who, what and why facts concerning it.

Who: Young people between the ages of 12 and 25 are the ones most often plagued by acne.

However, children as young as five years old can get acne and people over the age of 50 are not immune. Still, the young are the ones that most often develop acne. Acne affects both males and females. Young women will havmore frequent out-breaks but young men will have to deal with acne longer usually. Teenage Acne can and often does continue well into adulthood for men while it most often subsides in women by the time they are into their early twenties.

What: Acne is a common skin ailment. The correct name for it is Acne Vulgaris … and the word Vulgaris means common rather than vulgar. There are a multitude of causes for acne.

The most common factor is that with the onset of puberty, the body begins to secret excess male hormones called androgens. This happens in both males as well as females at puberty. This excess of hormones causes the body to oil. The oil, which is called sebum, makes its way up hair follicles and joins with dead skin cells. Together they clog up the pores. When the pores are clogged a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes forms. This bacteria causes the gland to swell and inflammation to develop. A pimple forms. In really sever cases, cysts can develop.
