2. Don’t — I repeat — don’t smoke. Your skin is a large organ and it needs a lot of circulation. Smoking impairs skin care dramatically. That’s why smokers’ skin looks dull and gray. It is near impossible to practice good skin care while smoking. Instead of having oxy-generated blood delivered to the surface of the skin, the skin receives poisons and oxidants.

3. Start your daily skin care plan by Hydrating. Hydrate your skin by drinking only water at the beginning of the day and throughout the day.

4. As you can tell from prior tips, proper skin care can be influenced by a lot of environmental factors including stress – Protect yourself from both emotional and environmental stress.

5. Take care of your face by washing your face twice a day using a cleanser containing AHA’s in the morning and a cleansing milk in the evening.

6. Don’t neglect certain areas of the skin. Skin care includes the Elbows, heels, and neck. These parts of your body that have been exposed to the elements over the years need exfoliation and moisturizing. Try using a body wash containing AHA’s and vitamins to exfoliate and nourish your entire body. Skin care literally is from head to toe.

7. Touch your face less and wash your hands more! It’s very tempting to pick, poke, squeeze, and scratch your skin in front of the mirror. But the more you traumatize the skin, the greater your risk of infection and scarring. Apply treatment products for skin care and let them work.

8. Keep your makeup clean. Replace the sponges in your compact, and clean your brushes on a regular basis.

History

Dynamic wrinkles can develop from years of facial movements that result from squinting or smiling like the little wrinkles around the eyes called “crow’s feet.”

Static wrinkles are formed by sagging skin. As skin loses its elasticity with age or spending too much time in the sun, it does not rebound from the constant forces of stress placed upon it. Skin gets thinner and loses collagen. As this plump appearance begins to disappear, the skin starts to sag, and wrinkles form.

The facelift has been the gold standard for treating static wrinkles. However, treating dynamic wrinkles was always difficult until the advent of Botox.

How It Works

Botox is very safe to administer. It has been used for the past twenty years to treat involuntary muscle spasms and more recently, migraine headaches and excessive sweating. Injections into the upper and lower lip treat the radial lines around the mouth, also known as ‘lipstick lines’ or ‘sunbeam wrinkles’. Botox can correct dimpling of the chin and ‘marionette lines’ by softening irregular folds on the chin and on either side of the mouth.

The Procedure

The entire procedure takes about ten minutes. Treatments consist of a few tiny injections in the group of muscles at the desired treatment area. Anesthesia isn’t necessary but some of our patients choose to numb the site with a cold pack. Discomfort is minimal and brief, so patients may resume normal activities immediately.

New patients require about 25 units of Botox for frown lines, 10-15 units for forehead lines and 10-15 units per side for crow’s feet. Men require higher doses because they have larger and stronger facial muscles.

Botox has revolutionized the world of cosmetic dermatology. It is used routinely as an adjunct to surgery, soft tissue fillers, laser resurfacing and pulsed light therapy for skin rejuvenation. The list of cosmetic uses continues to grow.

Acne – Skin care

Acne pimples plague many teenagers to a life altering extent. It can lead to self-consciousness for all but the most confident and self-assured individuals. For those with persistent acne, the hormones that bring about the onset of puberty, and that bring about the onset of acne can be a double-edged sword.

Fortunately there are effective treatments out there for it – many of them available over the counter. And while it may take a little time for these potions to get control of your acne, a little perseverance should yield positive results. And quite possibly, the use of these medications will minimize the emergence of any new lesions after you start using them.

But every bit as important as the use of the right medicine is employing the proper skin care regimen. And you don’t want to use anything rough textured when washing. Grainy cleansers or terry washcloths can also pop your zits. You should use your (clean) hands along with a gentle scrubbing motion. And just as important, rinse well to remove any soapy residue.

The cleansers that are specifically made for acne are the best choice for washing skin that is prone to it. They contain acne-fighting ingredients (like benzoyl peroxide) and can help fight acne by keeping your face clean, and by the inclusion of these ingredients that target the disease.

Use only non-comedogenic cosmetics and face creams, as other kinds may contain products that can aggravate or cause acne. Non-comedogenic means that it doesn’t cause comedones (acne lesions), like many makeup and cosmetic products do. In fact, there’s a mild but persistent type of acne specifically cause by cosmetics called, appropriately enough, acne cosmetica. Some of the ingredients in makeup that can cause acne are lanolin, mica, isopropyl myristrate, as well as many the fragrances used. So in choosing cosmetics, choose those that are labeled oil-free, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. This applies to moisturizers as well.

Make sure that anything that comes in contact with your face is clean. Keep sheets and pillowcases clean and change them frequently. The accumulation of dirt and oil on these bedding items can aggravate or cause additional acne. The same applies to your hair. If it is long enough to contact your face, pull it back so this doesn’t happen. This is especially important when sleeping.

And keep your hair clean. It can collect and accumulate both dirt and oil, and readily transfer them to your face. Also, be careful of gels and oils used around the hairline. This can cause acne in those areas even for those not prone to it. It’s best to go lightly on the mousse if you’ve an acne problem.

Acne can be a challenge to control but in almost all cases it’s possible to do so. Even if doing so means a visit to the dermatologist, the fix for your acne problem exists and it starts with proper skin care.
